Our dog is not just an animal.
Like so many others, we feel that she is an important member of our family, albeit spoiled member. She has her own bed, but still sleeps on ours most of the time; and has her own toys and enough of them to fill a “toybox”. Although she is not a puppy anymore, we still keep her active as much as possible. Of course, we used to have to play fetch with her for at least 30 minutes before she would wear out. These days, our senior dog only requires about 4 tosses before she is done, especially in the summer heat. Here are some tips for keeping your dog active during the summer with #collectivebias and #beyondsummer here to help!
Take shorter, but more frequent walks.
In the Spring and Fall, we can walk our dog for up to 3 miles at a time. During the summer heat, we only walk her 1/2 mile in the morning and a mile or so in the evenings. She gets really hot fast during this time, so we try and only do her walks when the sun is less intense.
While walking your dog, make sure to keep them off the asphalt and sidewalks.
Well, as much as possible anyway. The sidewalk or road can retain so much heat and having that directly on the dogs paws can easily burn the area. We try and keep her on the grass next to the sidewalks as much as possible to help protect her feet. If that isn’t possible where you live, you can always get some dog shoes like this from my affiliate partner to help protect their paws.
Keep lots of water in their bowl.
I am sure that goes without saying, but even carrying water and a bowl on walks may be a good idea for your dog to get a drink. While you are at it, make sure you carry some water for you, too. At home, we will add some ice to her bowl after a walk to entice her to drink more.
If possible, cut your dog’s hair as short as you can.
We actually will buzz clip our dog, who is part Australian shepherd and part golden retriever. This helps to keep her a bit cooler. Our daughter didn’t believe us at first that it mattered, so we had her put her heavy winter coat on and run out in the backyard for 30 seconds. It really does make a difference to our dog in keeping cool.
Provide quality food for your dog to keep them at their best.
You are careful with what you eat, so why not do the same with your dog? We used to feed her raw food, but to be honest it got so expensive for us. We use and trust Purina® Beyond® for our “baby” to help her stay healthy and active. It comes in great flavors that she loves, like the grain free chicken and egg recipe. We also like to “pump up the flavor” with all natural purees to give her an extra special treat as well.
You simply squeeze 1/2 tube per 20lbs weight over the dry food to give your dog that extra smile! When taking her out for walks, we also keep a couple of Purina® Beyond® treats with us. You can find all these great items in the pet food aisle at your local Meijer in their pet food aisle. They are super easy to find, just look for this display of great items:
