Google “beard oil” and you are sure to get 1,000,000 different recipes. Each one is unique and has a different variety of oils used in it to obtain different scents.

What Is Beard Oil?

Whether you live out in the country or consider yourself more “urban chic,” beards are quickly becoming fashionable all over the world.

Facial hair is now in vogue, and to be honest, there’s nothing I love more than the appearance of a well-groomed facial scruff.

To the contrary, however, an untamed, unruly beard can really make you stop and stare. Not only is it unattractive to look at, but I’ve been told by the men in my life that it doesn’t feel all that great, either.

Beard oil is a cosmetic product that is used to not only groom and nourish the skin beneath the beard, but to also keep the beard itself shiny soft, and smooth.

A good oil will mimic the natural oils that are produced by your skin, like sebum. Generally, it is comprised of some kind of carrier oil and essential oil mixture.

Most men don’t like to use grooming products – particularly those on their face – but beard oil is just as important as other products, like shampoo, in my opinion. Every man should have beard oil as part of his daily routine – and I’ll tell you why.

What Are the Benefits of Using Beard Oil?

Beard oil acts much like a moisturizer, except it goes straight to your hair follicles and prevents them from becoming brittle.

This is especially important if you live in a cold, windy climate because it nourishes the beard and helps to protect it against dandruff, flaking, and skin dryness.

Sometimes, the ingredients that you use in your beard oil can also provide additional nutrients that your skin and hair need, such as vitamin E. These can help prevent itchiness and irritation below the beard on the skin.

Beard oil also helps with the grooming process. It makes the beard smoother and neater, allowing it to be more manageable for styling purposes or just to neaten up your overall appearance.

It even gives your beard a nice sheen, allowing it to look healthier and to give your appearance a more put-together look.

You can even use beard oil to streamline your grooming routine. Because beard oils can be scented, you can forego using cologne or aftershave if you have a powerfully scented beard oil instead. One that contains sandalwood or cedarwood is a good choice in this aspect.

Why You Should Make Your Own Beard Oil

Beard oils can be made out of just about anything. They usually contain multiple ingredients, like hempseed oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, argan oil, or grapeseed oil. It’s often scented, although you can buy unscented versions, too.

Most commercial beard oils contain at least one or more artificial ingredients, and when you buy your beard oil from a retailer, you don’t get much control over the ingredients, the scent, or the final effect.

If you make your own beard oil, you can choose which ingredients to include and which to leave out.

You don’t have to worry about applying any unnatural chemicals to your skin, either. If you’re sensitive to synthetic scents, like my husband is, a heavily scented beard oil can cause you to break out in unsightly and uncomfortable skin reactions.

That’s not to say you should eschew it altogether, though! Using beard oil is a great way to moisturize your skin to prevent further damage – and making your own allows you to exercise full control over what goes into the final product.

In addition, it’s much cheaper to make your own beard oil. Caring for your beard obviously costs money, and if you plan to grow a beard for an extended period of time, you are going to be spending a lot of money on beard oil.

Some of the best-selling brands cost about $15 per ounce. If you apply just five drops per day, that bottle will only last you a couple of months.

When you’re purchasing beard oil directly from a retailer, you are going to be spending a minimum of $50 or $60 each year. If you want a premium brand of beard oil – or if you use more than five drops per day – you are going to be spending even more.

However, if you make your own DIY beard oil, you can gather all of your ingredients for about half of that cost – and the product will last you just as long.

The oils don’t usually go bad, so you can purchase them in bulk and make more beard oil as needed.

Plus, you’ll be able to experiment with fragrances and ingredients as you go, so you don’t need to worry about spending a ton of money on a beard oil that you end up not liking.

Beard Oil Tool Ingredients and Equipment

Carrier Oils

To get started, you need to know first that all beard oils have two main ingredients: carrier and essential oils.

There are hundreds of different essential and carrier oils out there that you can choose from, each of which has different therapeutic qualities.

Carrier oils not only deliver nutrients to your skin and cover the tough bristles on the beard, but they also help make it possible for the essential oils to get their jobs done, too.

You can use one single carrier oil or multiple – I recommend sticking to one carrier oil for the first time you make your beard oil, though.

Jojoba oil is one of the most popular and widely available carrier oils for beards. It does not irritate your skin and is incredibly gentle. Plus, it has a nice, subtle aroma. It’s the oil that is closest to the natural oils of your skin. Other oils you can use include:

Not all of these oils are perfect for use in beard oils. Although they all offer various benefits, some do go rancid over time.

Therefore, if you plan to make a large batch of beard oils and use them gradually over time, you are going to want to stick to an oil that is not known to be rancid (avoid oils like grapeseed or argan, which have limited shelf lives).

To help extend the life of your beard oil, you should store it in a dark-colored bottle. This will prevent UV rays from affecting their breakdown.

Essential Oils

In addition to carrier oils, you will also need to use essential oils. Essential oils can help moisturize your skin, prevent fungus, reduce the scruffiness of your beard, and stimulate growth.

The type of essential oil you use in your beard oil is entirely up to you. Some options to consider include:

I recommend that you start small with the essential oils, however. They can easily irritate your skin, so it’s important to use them in moderation when you are first getting started.

3 Steps to Making Beard Oil

I’ll give you multiple recipes to try for making your own beard oil, but know that the process for making these oils is the same regardless of which ingredients you choose.

1. Begin by sterilizing your bottles. You can do this by boiling your bottles in a pot of water – make sure you start boiling when the bottles are already in the water to prevent cracking.
2. In a mixing bowl, start by combining a drop of essential oil with your chosen carrier oil. Keep adding carrier oils and essential oils until you have a nice, creamy consistency.
3. You may need to microwave your mixture to help loosen up your carrier oil. If you are looking for a beard oil that has a consistency more like a cream, I recommend adding beeswax or shea butter – both of these will give your oil a nice, creamy consistency and make it easier to apply (more like a salve).

Once you have an oil that is the texture and scent you prefer, you can go ahead and use it. I don’t recommend certain mixing quantities because it is truly a matter of preference -and will also depend on the needs of your specific beard type.

Beard Oil Recipes and Mixtures

Recipe 1: Rustic Beard Oil

Combine the following ingredients:

• 1 oz. sweet almond oil
• ¼ oz argan oil
• 3 drops cedarwood oil
• 3 drops fir needle oil or pine oil
• 3 drops frankincense oil

This beard oil has a great, woodsy scent. It is warm and is a great option for the guy who wants to forego the use of cologne or aftershave. Use it in moderation, though, as it can be quite strong.

Recipe 2: Conditioning Beard Oil

Combine the following ingredients:

• 1 oz. coconut oil
• 1 oz. jojoba oil
• 10 drops lavender oil

This beard oil can be applied once a day, and it serves as an excellent conditioner for your skin and beard.

The lavender has a great, delicate aroma, too. If it’s still too heavily scented, you can also remove some of the lavender drops, too.

Recipe 3: Growth-Stimulating Beard Oil

Combine the following ingredients:

• 4 drops castor oil
• 5 drops rosemary
• 1 oz. coconut oil
• 1 oz. sweet almond oil

This beard oil is made with castor oil, which has quite a thick consistency. Be careful about using too much, as it can cause your beard to become too greasy.

However, this beard oil is a great choice if you want a product to stimulate hair growth. Castor is known to boost circulation in your skin, while rosemary helps prevent beard dandruff and shedding.

Recipe 4: Mountain Man Musk Beard Oil Recipe

I happen to love earthy, woodsy scents and I especially love them on my hubby. In the last few months, he has become the “mountain man” of our home with a bushy, unruly beard and ‘stach.

So, wanting to keep him looking a bit more cleaned up, I came up with my own recipe of beard oil.

I call this concoction “Mountain Man Musk” Beard Oil.

I ordered most of my oils from Amazon in this blend, and I linked them up for you. I blended them up with vitamin E oil and stored in a spray bottle for ease of use.

All he has to do now is to spray each side of his face once and gently rub it all over. He does this after he gets out of the shower, and it has worked to really soften his beard.

Now, how to make this beard oil:

• 1 1/2 ounces Vitamin E oil
• 30 drops Cedarwood Oil
• 30 drops Nutmeg Oil
• 30 drops Frankincense Oil
• 30 drops Clove Oil

Blend all together, and store in a dark-colored bottle.

Recipe 5: Citrusy Beard Oil

Combine the following ingredients:

• ½ oz. jojoba oil
• ½ oz. argan oil
• 2 drops lime, orange, or lemon oil
• 3 drops peppermint oil
• 3 drops tea tree oil

This beard oil has one of the best and brightest aromas. It smells super fresh and can help give you a clean appearance and scent.

Recipe #6: Hippy Beard Oil

• 1 oz grapeseed oil
• 4 drops ylang-ylang
• 2 drops patchouli
• 1 drop cinnamon

This beard oil has a great natural scent that goes particularly well with tie-dye. Just kidding, of course – but I promise, it smells great.

Recipe #7: Herb Bed Beard Oil

If you grow your own herbs, this beard oil is one you’ve got to consider making. You can use these herbs or use whatever you have growing out back – it’s all based on your personal preferences.

• 15 ml avocado oil
• 15 ml sweet almond oil
• 10 drops oregano oil
• 10 drops patchouli oil

• 1 oz apricot kernel oil
• 5 drops castor oil
• 5 drops cedarwood oil

When to Use Beard Oil

Beard oil hydrates the skin and also helps to soften and tame your beard hair, meaning it can work double-duty as a styling agent.

Therefore, the best time to apply beard oil is first thing in the morning, preferably after you have showered or cleansed your face. This way, your pores and hair follicles will be wide open and able to absorb the oil.

You only need a few drops, or to use a little bit of the cream for your beard oil to be effective.

Even if you live in a cold, windy, or otherwise dry climate, just a few drops of beard oil is plenty to make sure the product coats your hair. If you have a very long beard, however, you may want to use a comb to evenly distribute the oils.

Other Tips on Caring For Your Beard

As you probably already know, applying beard oil to your beard isn’t the only thing you need to do to ensure luxurious growth.

You also need to wash your beard – just as you would wash your hair, but you shouldn’t use an all-purpose shampoo and conditioner for this. No, you need to use a top-rated beard wax or shampoo.

Using a regular bar of soap or shampoo for your head hair can strip your beard of its essential natural oils – it can also break your skin out. Instead, use a beard shampoo that is designed to deal with the coarser hairs of a beard.

You also need to be using a conditioner while in the shower each day.

When it comes to styling, it’s a good idea to invest in either a good beard comb or a boars hair beard brush. These will allow you to remove any knots and tangles in your beard, as well as to shape it so that it looks even more awesome when you apply that beard oil you’ve worked so hard to make!

A note on all the recipes I’ve provided – if you have sensitive skin, be careful experimenting with these essential oils. It might be worth your while to try a beard oil without any of the essential oil additives first to see how your skin reacts. You can always add more oils later.
