The idea of pulling out the BBQ and tossing some grass fed burgers makes my mouth water.
I can smell the neighbor “firing” up their grill on a regular basis now, and it smells so amazing! Beef, black bean, turkey, chicken, even salmon; whatever type of burger you are grilling, buns are sure to be in the picture. Why put your gorgeously grilled perfection on a plain ol’ store bought bun? Making your own is so easy to do, especially if you have a WonderMix mixer. It’s 900 watts of pure awesomeness make this recipe a start to finish in 30 minutes!
All you need for homemade deliciousness:
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 T. yeast
- 1/3 oil of choice (grapeseed, hemp, olive or coconut all work well)
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. salt
- 3 1/2 cups fresh milled flour (soft wheat, spelt, kamut or other grain all work well with this)
Dissolve the yeast in the warm water, and add honey and oil.
Allow to “proof” for 5 minutes, then add egg, flour and salt. Knead with a dough hook on setting “1” for 10 minutes, adding additional flour by the tablespoon if necessary to get the dough to “pull from the sides” and form a dough ball. Allow to rise for 5 minutes.
Roll the dough out to 1 inch thick. Cut into bun shapes, using a large canning lid band. You can also form baseball sized dough balls and flatten into disks by hand if the rustic look is desired. Lay on parchment paper lined baking sheet and let rest for another 10 minutes. Bake at 425° for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool, then slice down the middle and add your favorite burgers! Makes a great sloppy joe holder as well! *** you can use this recipe to make hot dog buns as well, just shape the dough into logs before baking***
