Getting started with your garden is as simple as putting some seeds in the ground, watering and hoping for the best, right?
That’s what I used to think as well. As a matter of fact, I would normally go to the home improvement store every May and buy my plants. We would spend upwards of $150 each year getting the garden going. We used to think it was money well spent. And, for organic veggies fresh from our backyard, it probably was. But, could I do this even cheaper? Not the way I was doing it.
In my gardening zone, zone 5, I need to start our seeds indoors.
I just don’t have the long growing season to plant most of the seeds directly in the ground. So, I would buy a bag of potting mix, toss some seeds in, and hope for the best. Each year, I would fail completely. Why? Well, I had no idea what I was doing to really get the seeds going. Did I need a light? What was a seed mat, anyway? Many of those seedlings that did somehow survive got planted only to die a short time later. Hardening off was a term I never really understood.

Rick will show you how to use what you have on hand, or how to get some cheap containers to get seedlings going.
