76 Cast Iron Recipes that are Simply Delicious

You know, I think I have a food obsession…seriously, what is this, my umpteenth article about food? Well, if I’m a foodie then I’d best put together something interesting.

The only question is: what to write? Hmm…How about a list of delicious cast iron recipes to try? Yeah! That sounds good!

Apart from being affordable and long-lasting, cast-iron cookware is easy to maintain and can be used at fairly high temperatures without being damaged.

You can use them over fires, on stovetops, and in ovens and can cook practically anything in them.

They enhance, rather than dilute, flavors and each use will put a trace of iron in your food.

So, what can you make with cast iron cookware?

1. Sourdough Pancakes

“Pancakes are love, pancakes are life.” – Doug Walker and Bennet White (The Nostalgia Critic and BennettTheSage)

Who doesn’t like pancakes? They’re a bit of a mess to make sure, but it’s so worth it! Cinnamon sugar, mincemeat, coconut/almonds, and Nutella, the options are endless.

With this recipe, you add a sourdough starter to the milk/flour mixture and allow that to sit for up to 24 hours before adding eggs, baking soda, salt, and sugar to make the batter workable.

A bit of melted butter in the skillet/pan will keep the batter from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

You can add bits of fruit to add a bit of extra flavor and either make small pancakes or large (share-around-the-table-size) pancakes!

2. Skillet Hasselback Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes with a salty twist to them? Why not?

This is basically pieces of sweet potato baked in melted butter and coated in a mixture of herbs, shallots, parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, garlic, salt, and pepper.

Woah! That’s quite a mixture! You can also add nuts if you’d like a bit of extra flavor to this already flavorful dish.

You know, I’m not really a garlic person – I can’t stand the stuff, but I’d be willing to give this a try with or without the garlic.

After all, like my gran used to say: you can’t say you don’t like it, if you haven’t tried it.

3. Crispy Baked Keto Avocado Fries

Avocado can be made into, for lack of a better description, French fries. You set up the spice/crumb coating and basting/coating stations.

Cover the avocado wedges in the crumb coating and deep fry the coated avocados. If you like avocados, this is a great recipe to try.

4. Rolled Buttermilk Biscuits

These are labeled as biscuits; they more closely resemble scones than biscuits and who doesn’t love a good scone?

Whether it’s plain or you’ve added a bit of apricot/strawberry jam and some whipped cream, this is a delicacy that is never going to go away.

5. One-Skillet Pasta

Do you like spaghetti? Of course, you do, I’ll bet the cleanup’s a nuisance though. Well, that’s where the one-skillet pasta comes in.

It’s essentially spaghetti bolognese with everything cooked in one pan and the addition of mushrooms and a few other things. If that sounds appealing, check out the recipe here.

6. Salsa Corn Cakes

A corn fritter or pancake with a bit of salsa mixed in? A bit weird but I’m game! Well…it’s a bit more complicated than that, how’s it done?

Simple; you mix butter and cream cheese into a smooth texture then add a mixture of milk and eggs and fold in some corn and salsa for a delicious treat!

7. Oven-Seared Tenderloin with Pan Herb Sauce

A tender, juicy steak seared in an oven using a cast iron skillet? What’s that? Does it come with a delicious pan herb sauce? YES, PLEASE!

The best part is that crispy crust that the cast iron gives the meat. The sauce…well, I suppose you could mix your own sauce with whatever you like but the recipe I’ve found includes shallots, herbs, and cream.

8. Buttermilk Fried Chicken

Deep-fried chicken is a favorite treat in my family – come on, who doesn’t like KFC?

Okay so, how do you make this particular variant? You start out by coating the chicken in the spice mix (which is a mix of flour, paprika, salt, pepper, and herbs) and stirring it in buttermilk until it’s coated thoroughly and then refrigerate for around 6 hours.

Once that’s done, coat it again and toss it into your skillet and cook for ten minutes before turning it over for another 10 minutes.

Now, usually when we make our own KFC chicken, we use flour and a pre-made spice mix and use egg to bind the flour and spice, and just deep fry in a pan or pot of heated oil.

I’ve never thought of using buttermilk (it’s not exactly easy to find in South Africa) but it would be an interesting change and I’m definitely going to be keeping my eyes open for a bottle!

9. Cast Iron Pizza

Pizza! I love pizza but it can be a tad pricey sometimes and you don’t always get much variety. What if you could make your own?

You’d be able to put whatever you want on it in whatever quantity you want.

Pizza dough, spice, and/or sauce, topped with plenty of cheese and pepperoni, ham, chicken, or bacon. What’s not to like, try this one for yourself. You won’t regret it.

Oh, and yes, pineapple DOES belong on pizza!

10. Brandied Pepper Steak

Not much left to the imagination on this one; it’s a pepper steak cooked in brandy with herbs, salt, pepper, demi-glace, and heavy cream…my mouth is watering.

I’ve had steaks cooked in wine before which was quite nice, and I like a bit of brandy in coca cola every now and again; so, this is definitely a winner in my book! Check it out here.

11. Seared Salmon

I like fish but my only memory of eating it isn’t exactly a pleasant one. That said, this looks really good so I’d be willing to give it a go.

To make this dish, you’re going to melt butter in a skillet and place the fillets skin-side down and leave it for a few minutes until it flakes easily. Once it’s ready, serve and chow down!

12. Grandma’s Apple Pie

Did you really think I’d pass up an apple pie recipe? This particular one has three layers to it which means more apples and cinnamon!

It’s made the same as a regular apple pie but in a cast iron skillet – more apples and a bigger pie what more could you ask for? Here’s the recipe for you.

13. Cheesy Creole Breakfast

I don’t know how to describe this one; it’s kind of like scrambled eggs with bell peppers, sausage, shrimp, garlic, and coated in cheese.

It’s covered in a thick, creamy creole sauce (a mix of mayonnaise, mustard, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce.) That sounds like quite a breakfast! Here’s the recipe for you!

14. Chicken Thighs in Mustard Sauce

This one is nice and simple, cook your chicken pieces (in this case, thighs) in olive oil until lightly browned stirring in onions as you go.

Then take the chicken out of the pan, add the mustard, cream, and wine and stir until it’s got a creamy texture.

Put the chicken back in the sauce for a few minutes and it’s chow time! This recipe uses thighs but, you could probably use any type of chicken pieces for it – you can get the recipe here.

15. Chicken Alfredo

Alfredo, a pasta dish with a thick, creamy sauce and whatever you’d like to add to it. In this recipe, you blacken both sides of your chicken pieces and slice them into strips which you then place over the pasta. Simple, easy, and delish! Try it for yourself.

16. Shakshuka

At first glance, this dish resembles fried eggs in mincemeat but that’s not quite right. The eggs are poached in a sauce containing olive oil, tomatoes, onion, garlic, and peppers.

17. Miracle Mango Chicken Salsa

Rice + Chicken + Mango Salsa = Yum!

A quick pre-cook in the skillet for the chicken, and then you prepare the rice and mix a bit of the salsa into it.

Once that’s done, you add the chicken back into the skillet and cook the whole lot together. Here’s the recipe for you!

18. Sawmill Gravy

Okay, this one requires the cooking of sausages! Once the sausages are done, you’re going to keep two tablespoons of the fat, and add flour and milk. You let it simmer and thicken and then you add it to whatever you like. If you’d like the recipe, here it is.

19. Grilled Pimento Cheese Sandwiches

Pimento cheese is a mixture of cream cheese, mayonnaise, cheddar, and gouda. You’re going to prepare this mixture adding in peppers and seasoning to taste.

Once you’ve got the cheese where you like it, slap it between two slices of bread, put a bit of mayo on the outside of the sandwich, and toss it into a warm skillet to cook.

20. Hamburgers

It should be plainly obvious that you can make burgers with a skillet. This recipe takes you through making the patties, and how to cook them for the juiciest burgers possible. Try it and enjoy!

21. Chocolate Chip Cookies

I’m not the biggest fan of chocolate chip anything. Don’t get me wrong, I like chocolate and there’s nothing wrong with chocolate chip treats – if they’re done right, but they aren’t my favorite.

That said, these look really good, and I’ve got a really bad case of munchies. Looking at these cookies, it just got much worse.

Try it for yourself, judging from the pictures, I’d say that using a skillet just makes bigger cookies which is always a good thing!

22. Skillet S’mores

This is a treat that I’ve seen a couple of times, usually as a sort of marshmallow/biscuit sandwich. This recipe changes it up a bit by making a marshmallow fondue.

You heat a skillet in the oven, add chocolate and butterscotch chips and cover in an even layer of cream.

The cream/chip layer is then topped with marshmallows and set in the oven to bake until the marshmallows are golden and melted.

Then you take crackers/biscuits and dip them into the melted marshmallow…I’m not even halfway through this list and I’m already hungry! Try this recipe, try it!

23. Blueberry and Nectarine Galette

This is kind of like a fruit tart. You roll out some puff pastry and lightly press it into your skillet, allowing the edges to hang over the edge of the pan.

Mix blueberries and nectarines with sugar, lemon juice, and cornstarch and add to the skillet.

You’re going to brush the visible pastry with an egg wash – whisked egg – and bake until the fruit is bubbling.

I love this idea and the recipe says to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream…It doesn’t say how large a scoop to add though…

24. Giant Skillet Cookie

This is exactly what it sounds like, a giant cookie made in your skillet. You make your cookie dough and spread it evenly across your skillet, decorate as desired, and bake until ready. Here’s the recipe for you.

25. Chili Powder

If you’re looking for an easy-to-make chili powder recipe, here it is. Chilis and cumin in a cast iron skillet cooked and then ground into a fine, soft powder. Don’t believe me? See for yourself.

26. Duck Confit

Confit is where the meat is cooked while submerged in its own fat and then preserved and stored (in the fat).

I know it doesn’t sound too appetizing and it’s definitely not going to be for everyone.

That said, if you like it this would be a good addition to existing confit dish recipes or a good starting recipe for you if you’re curious about it. Give it a try.

27. Duck a l’Orange

Okay, so duck a l’orange – duck meat in an orange sauce. I will admit, duck isn’t really my thing but if it’s done right then it’s very nice. I tried a version of this when I was a kid.

My grandmother made a duck recipe with an orange sauce at Christmas time and while it wasn’t my favorite, it was nice. Here’s a recipe for you!

28. Muffuletta

This is an interesting one, it’s essentially a loaf of bread with meat and vegetables cooked in it and then cut into sandwich portions. Give it a try and see how you like it.

29. Tarte Tatin

Apple pie gone slightly wrong, it’s not the best description I’ve ever given but it works. This one has a fun story behind it.

The dish was apparently an accidental creation by one Stephanie Tatin. She and her sister Caroline ran a hotel in France and, one day while trying to make an apple pie, she left the apples cooking for too long.

Of course, she panics a bit and tries to save the dish and throws the pastry over the apples and puts the whole pan into the oven to bake.

Another version of the story is that Stephanie was trying to make an apple pie/tart and prepped the whole thing upside down by mistake – kind of sounds like me in the kitchen sometimes.

By the time she realizes her mistake, it’s too late but she pulls it from the oven, flips it over, and presents it to their guests.

Their guests are apparently delighted by the strange culinary concoction and the dish becomes a signature of the hotel.

Strange anecdotes aside, this is a delicious apple dessert that will take a bit of patience to prepare but oh how your patience shall be rewarded! Give it a try and see for yourself.

30. Cubano Sandwiches

Maybe I’m biased – because I eat toasted sandwiches pretty regularly – but there isn’t much about this one that’s particularly special, you’re making toasted sandwiches.

The recipe I found adds Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, roast pork, and pickles to the mix but other than that, these are just plain old, toasted ham and cheese sandwiches.

Still a good dish though, and if you haven’t ever eaten a toasted sandwich before…well, why not give this one a try?

31. Flapjacks

What? You thought I was done with the desserts? You must be joking! Here’s a flapjack recipe for making flapjacks in cast iron skillets Thicker, smaller pancakes are just as good as normal pancakes!

32. S’Mores Cast Iron Pie

This is a chocolate cream pie topped with roasted marshmallows, how could I not put it here? It can be made with either a glass dish or a cast iron skillet.

Essentially you pour heated cream over chocolate and give it a minute or two then mix the chocolate and cream and spread it evenly on your crust.

Top with marshmallows and bake in the oven. Here’s the recipe for this particularly sweet treat.

33. Mashed Potatoes

Who doesn’t like mashed potatoes? This recipe is interesting because it uses a method that I don’t use and, frankly, had never thought of using.

You start out by cooking the potatoes whole in a skillet and leaving them to cool, then you wrap the cooled potatoes in aluminum foil and bake in the oven until they’ve been cooked through.

34. Skillet Brownie

An 8-inch chocolate brownie? Sounds good to me! You mix your brownie batter and spread it across the skillet evenly then toss it in the oven until it’s ready.

35. City Caesar Salad

Okay, I know what you’re thinking: a salad? Really? Well…partially – sort of.

You mix the salad ingredients, and the cast iron skillet is used to make the croutons for your salad. I don’t know if this is a cheat or not but here’s the recipe!

36. Three Cheese Spaghetti Pie

I’m on the fence with this one, I don’t necessarily dislike it – it’s pie and I’m willing to try almost anything when it comes to pie – but it also uses spaghetti as the main ingredient.

37. Chocolate Chip-Cherry Cookies

This is a chocolate chip cookie I’d eat regularly! I said before that I’m not a huge chocolate chip fan, but this has cherries in it!

Now, I said before that chocolate chip treats are nice if done right; I stand by that statement, but I don’t think you can go wrong with this one – unless you really try. Try it for yourself and see what you think.

38. Peaches and Cream Skillet Shortcake

Another fruity treat? Yes, please! Peaches and cream shortcake…do I even need to try convincing you that this is a good one? In all seriousness, this is a wonderful treat and it’s super easy to make.

Yes, another s’mores recipe and this one incorporates another personal favorite treat of mine, sweet potato.

40. Dutch Baby

Another pancake recipe? Why not? The difference with this one is that the pancakes themselves are thicker – more like a Yorkshire pudding than a pancake. This means you have a bit of flexibility with the fillings as a result.

41. Jalapeno Popper Chicken

If you like hot/spicy food, this is the recipe for you. Jalapeno peppers, chicken breasts, cream cheese, and bacon all baked to perfection. This is spicy, cheesy goodness and I highly recommend at least trying it.

42. Rhubarb Cobbler

Cobbler is a dessert that’s close to a pie – with the difference being the use of biscuit dough instead of pie crust.

Rhubarb is a vegetable with a very tart flavor and is highly nutritious and delicious! Of course, if it wasn’t delicious, it wouldn’t be on this list, would it? Here’s the recipe for you.

43. Chicken Enchiladas with Red Sauce

Mexican food isn’t always a hit and I’ll be the first to admit enchiladas aren’t really for me.

Then again, I was trying a premade, store-bought enchilada so that might have something to do with it. Either way, this recipe has me curious enough to try it again.

44. Mexican White Chicken Tortilla Lasagna

Shredded chicken layered in cheese and burrito tortillas and baked in a cast iron skillet. Yes, it really is that simple and if you don’t believe me try for yourself. This is a fantastic twist on regular Italian lasagna, and I love it!

45. Pan Fried Boneless Pork Chops

Seared/pan-fried boneless pork chops can be ready to eat in 10 minutes without difficulty.

It’s done the same way as when you’re searing a steak; you have a high-heat skillet and you put the meat in for a few minutes to fry on both sides.

46. Pan Fried Sweet Potato Cubes

I know it sounds weird but hear me out. Using a lager, brown ale, or whatever beer you like; you make the batter by mixing in flour, salt, garlic, and other seasonings.

49. Brown Butter Caramel Eggnog

Okay, so eggnog… was something that, until a few years ago, I hadn’t tried. Eggnog just isn’t a thing in South Africa, so it just isn’t made but my sister found a recipe online and made some just to see what the hype was about.

A few substitutions here and there were needed but the result was very tasty! It’s like a warm milkshake.

A blend of eggs, milk/cream, and flavors (essences, syrups, etc.) is a great treat for the whole family.

50. Chocolate Pecan Supreme Brookie with Kahlua Caramel Sauce

A brookie is a brownie cookie and this one has caramel, chocolate, pecan nuts, and Kahlua in it.

This should’ve been at the start of the list, scrambled eggs are a dish you can make in pretty much any frying pan/skillet.

52. Thin Mint Cheesecake

You had my curiosity, now you have my attention. I love cheesecake in general, and the idea of a cheesecake in a crust of thin mint girl scout cookies. The cream cheese filling is given a hint of mint extract to add that extra mint flavor.

53. Aebleskiver

This Danish treat is spherical in shape and is like a donut. The batter is rolled on a knitting needle to provide the spherical shape – you can use a fork too.

If you like raisins, this could be a good one to try. Spotted dog is an Irish soda bread with raisins folded into it.

Okay, I saw this one and it was just so weird and different from everything else that I had to put it on this list. It’s a simple, tasty homemade treat that you can enjoy anytime.

Ah yes, one of the treats of my childhood; my grandmother used to bake these every now and then and it was always fun to arrive for a visit and find them in the kitchen.

Of course, they never lasted very long – as you can imagine – we loved them. You can get them at supermarkets sometimes, but the homemade ones just taste so much better! If you need a recipe for these then you’re in luck, I have one right here!

68. Chocolate Babka Loaves

This kind of looks like chocolate-filled croissants and I happen to love chocolate-filled croissants so here we are.

Although a better comparison would probably be a Swiss roll – the only real difference is that Swiss rolls use apricot/strawberry jam and babka loaves use chocolate.

The important thing is that it tastes great and is relatively easy to prepare – although the prep time is going to require patience on your part.

In our house, bacon is something that we eat fairly often, and this is a dish that I haven’t had in ages – we’re rather picky eaters and I don’t think the reception to this one was very warm in our place.

I genuinely don’t know anyone who doesn’t like macaroni and cheese. It’s simple and easy to make (once you get the hang of it) and is super filling and tasty.

71. Green Chile Steak

A chili steak: that’s basically what this is. You’re going to blend chilis, garlic, onion powder, cilantro, lemon juice and zest, and water.

With your sauce made, you’re going to grill some steaks and serve them with the sauce for a spicy steak dinner that’s packed with flavor. Here’s the recipe if you want to try it yourself.

72. Grilled Steak Nachos

If you like Mexican food, then this is an interesting twist on a familiar, and popular dish.

Nachos is a personal favorite of mine and the idea of adding pieces of grilled steaks to it is fun and adds a bit of extra flavor to the dish. If this is something you’d like to try, then here’s the recipe.

73. Bananas Foster

I initially thought this was a banana split, but that’s not exactly accurate. A banana split is a banana with ice cream and chocolate/caramel sauce. A bananas foster is where you make the caramel sauce and cook the bananas in it.

When they’re ready you serve the bananas with a healthy (or not so healthy) amount of vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. The alcohol is optional, and you can substitute fruit juice if you prefer. You can find a recipe here.

74. Cheesy Pizza Rolls

These are a savory spin on the cinnamon bun which uses pepperoni, parmesan and mozzarella cheese, garlic, and Italian spices. I love this idea; it’s easy to make and it tastes great. Here’s the recipe if you want to try it.

75. Almond Pound Cake

Just looking at the recipe for this one had my mouth watering and the fact that they used holiday-themed molds just adds that extra aesthetic kick.

Now, having had something similar if not identical to this, I can tell you it is super-duper sweet, and you’ll want more when it’s gone.

The vanilla and almond extracts add a great flavor to the already sweet cake and frosting. This is something I highly recommend trying if you get the chance. With that said, here’s the recipe.

76. Butterscotch Pie

Let’s end on a high note with another pie dessert!

This one is a sweet treat that’ll have you wanting more. A crispy pie crust with a butterscotch filling and topped with cream – I’m drooling.

When I say this is a sweet treat, I’m not kidding; too much of this would probably be a very bad idea but…what am I saying? There’s no such thing as too much of this one!

The butterscotch filling is sweet enough and the crispiness of the crust adds a bit of crunch to each bite.

The cream topping adds extra flavor, and sweetness to the pie and gives it a nice smoothness. If you don’t like cream toppings, then you can top your butterscotch pie with meringue instead.

In all seriousness, this is a fantastic dessert or teatime snack. Of course, in my house it would be breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner.

As nice as it is, however, please enjoy it in moderation – there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Here’s the recipe for you.
