18 Fancy Blue Chicken Breeds To Consider

Blue chickens are the most extravagant, fancy chickens you will ever see. The funny thing about them is that they aren’t necessarily all blue. In fact, the color differences often make them even more striking.

As you read on, you will discover that blue chickens aren’t as blue as you were expecting… You need to know that blue coloring is a result of breeding two different colored birds.

The genetics behind the mix of blue coloring evolved from a mix of a black bird with a splash bird. You need one gene from the black bird and one from the splash bird. The blue evolves from a dilution of the black gene. These blue chickens are absolute marvels…

Ameraucana chickens are strikingly blue with darker edges on their blue feathers. They have full muffs, beards, and tails.

These chickens aren’t really bred for meat as they have a low meat yield, and their meat is not tasty. They’re very charismatic birds who love to snoop around and get into mischief.

Ameraucanas are always good for a good laugh, even going so far as to let themselves into your house via your doggy door. They don’t like being handled but love to be around people.

One of my all-time favorite breeds is the silkie. Silkies are a veritable explosion of fluffy feathers.

Silkies are the best chickens to keep as pets. These cuties are very fond of human contact. Always curious about their surroundings, they will happily follow you around to see what you’re doing.

They have five toes instead of the standard four. The hens are extremely broody and will sit on any eggs they find, and they make perfect mothers.

Cochins are very peaceful, docile birds. Because of their gentle nature, it is easy to tame them, making them wonderful pets for the whole family. Sadly, Blue Cochins are very rare and difficult to come by.

Jersey Giants have a friendly, calm personality, making them great pets because of their friendly nature. They’re also cold hardy and lay throughout winter.

Marans chicken eggs appeal to people all over the world. The eggshells are a dark chocolate color.

Blue Marans chickens are friendly, docile, and calm. They prefer being free range and are excellent foragers. They are winter hardy birds that will lay during winter.

Rhode Island Blue

Rhode Island Blue chickens tick all the boxes and more. If you’re looking for a friendly, calm, adventurous, active chicken, look no more.

The roosters can be a bit aggressive, but that is because these guys are protective of their girls. This makes them great security alarms and they throw in the function of the chicken equivalent of SWAT to go with that, free of charge. They will chase predators away and are suspicious of anyone new on the property.

Blue Plymouth Rock

Blue Plymouth Rocks are calm, gentle, easily adaptable birds. In a coop or free range, they do not mind where you keep them, as long as they have food, water, shelter, and some buddies to hang out with.

The hens are broody and great mothers. Friendly or not, the roosters can be bullies now and then.

Blue Rosecomb Bantam

LifespanEgg ColorMale SizeFemale SizeCombLegsFeathers
4 to 8 yearsTinted1.6 pounds1.38 poundsVivid redGreyish blueBlue slate-grey, white, black, blue

In this breed, the males are the genuine showstoppers with their long, arching tail feathers. They have bright red, distinctive combs with white ears.

They can be gentle and friendly, but they can also be very aggressive and go out of their way to start a fight.

Blue Rosecomb Bantams are able to survive in the cold, however, they will need to be sheltered from the cold as their combs can get frostbite.

They love to fly, so maybe you should consider some type of sheltered housing.

Blue Andalusian chickens do not like being cooped up. They need their space to avoid frustration turning into fight night.

Blue Andalusians are hardy and lay throughout winter. They do need good shelter in winter to prevent frostbite on their combs.

The hens are not very broody, so an investment in an incubator is advised.

If ‘cuddle bugs’ truly existed, they would look like the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte.

These docile, friendly birds are a great addition to your flock, but more importantly, they are affectionate and will happily cuddle with you and your kids.

Blue Australorp

LifespanEgg ColorMale SizeFemale SizeCombLegsFeathers

These chickens are very friendly, calm, and gentle-natured with other birds and with people. They absolutely love being with their human and become very attached.

They will happily settle on your lap watching TV, reading a book, sleeping, and any other chance they can. They are great family birds.

Blue Sumatra

LifespanEgg ColorMale SizeFemale SizeCombLegsFeathers

Blue Sumatras are primarily exhibition birds because of their stunning looks and sleek lines. They have long tail feathers that add to their popularity in shows.

Blue Sumatras aren’t very friendly with people. They enjoy the open rather than being caged.

You should know that they do like to fly, so consider putting a high chicken mesh, or other suitable roof over their living space to keep them contained.

Blue Dutch Bantam

LifespanEgg ColorMale SizeFemale SizeCombLegsFeathers
4 to 8 yearsWhite1.25 pounds1.13 poundsSingle with 5 pointsSlateSolid blue, sometimes have laced or penciled feathers on their neck,

Blue Dutch bantams are mainly kept as exhibition birds and pets for the whole family, even the very young ones. These are among the smallest bantams in the world.

They are fliers but are very affectionate birds. The hens are known to be very broody and excellent moms.

A noteworthy feature – in addition to being a very pretty chicken overall – is the stunning fluff at the base of their tails.

Sapphire Olive Egger

LifespanEgg ColorMale SizeFemale SizeCombLegsFeathers
5 to 10 yearsOlive7 to 8 pounds6 to 7 poundsPeaYellowBlue-grey, smoky grey, blue, lavender, brown, black

Saphire Olive Eggers are great family birds because of their unflappable – pardon the pun – nature. They are docile, calm, intelligent, and kind. They take their time foraging and are happy to spend time with both big and little people.

White Crested Blue Polish

LifespanEgg ColorMale SizeFemale SizeCombLegsFeathers

White Crested Blue Polish chickens are easy to startle and often nervous. The reason for this is easy to understand when you look at the feathers around their eyes.

Their feathers cover much of their eyes to where things can suddenly appear when they move their heads. Truthfully, I would freak out too.

Once they realize they aren’t in danger, they eat humble pie and revert back to being sweet, docile, calm, and friendly birds.

Whiting True Blue

Whiting True Blue chickens are anything but quiet or docile. This is a high-energy, noisy breed. They love to be free-range as they enjoy exercise.

While they are generally friendly, they are not fans of being handled.

Delaware Blue Chicken

LifespanEgg ColorMale SizeFemale SizeCombLegsFeathers

While currently not a recognized breed by the American Poultry Association, the Delaware Blue Chicken is one of the bluest, most attractive chicken breeds. However, I expect it is only a matter of time before they make the recognized breed chickens list.

The Delaware Blue chickens are great free-range birds that love to forage and explore. They have sweet personalities and are very friendly, curious birds that enjoy being with people. However, they aren’t willing lap-birds.

They do love to gossip; they chat back and forth constantly; however, they do at least keep the volume down. While some are bluer than others, all of these breeds are truly fancy, exquisite chickens.

Blue Rock

Blue Rock chickens are very popular birds; they are great for their meat, eggs, exhibition, and as pets.

Blue Rock’s are very sweet tempered, quiet, docile birds. They form great bonds with people, making them great additions to the whole family.
